Our general meeting this month will include a presentation by Dr. Mary Tatum , a veterinarian with the Brittmoore Animal Hospital.  Dr Tatum is a 1980 graduate of Texas A&M, College of Veterinary Medicine with interests in reproduction and preventive medicine.  She has an interest in performance and sporting dogs and is is known for her radiograph techniques for submission for OFA certifications.  She had bred Golden Retrievers for the past 30 years and Labradors for the past 15 years.  In addition to being a licensed Field Trial Judge, she is a member of several retriever clubs and is currently the President of the Lone Star Retriever Club.  Dr. Tatum's discussion topic will include health issues related to sporting dogs and is willing to answer any questions you may have regarding your dog.

***** New Meeting Location *****     ***** New Meeting Location *****

Maybe I should say an Old meeting location.  Beginning with the August 4th General Meeting we will be back at Gander Mountain on Hempstead Hwy (290).  The store is located on the south east corner of the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 6 in northwest Houston.  Meeting time is still 7:00pm.

Business Meeting

A formal business meeting is not planned for August.  The executive committee is evaluating the necessity of conducting a monthly business meeting and will publish a new schedule once the frequency is finalized.  We will continue to discuss pertinent club business issues at our monthly general meeting.

Weekly Training Sessions

If you haven't been able to attend the weekly training sessions on Tuesday evenings that our training coordinator, Deborah Story has arranged, you are missing out on some excellent handling instruction.  The program will run all summer long and covers transitioning your dog from Junior to Senior.  If you feel you and your dog could benefit from this instruction, contact Deborah at sugarlab3@yahoo.com to let her know you are interested.

As the spring hunt test season has ended, you may find more members training on Saturday mornings at either the Retriever Training Area in George Bush Park (GBP) or our club training grounds.  See the Schedule of Events.  The GBP training area consists of the pond and the area immediately surrounding the pond underneath the large electrical transmission line tower in George Bush Park.  It's directly across the road from the entrance to American Shooting Centers.  The club grounds are located near I-10 (Katy Freeway) and Highway 6.  Members may contact a club officer for a map, Liability Waiver, and gate access.

Training Day  - Saturday, 7 August 2010

Our next club training day is scheduled for 7:00 am, Saturday, August 7th at Susan Wagner's.  Professional trainer and Tejas club member Steve Biggers of Rocky Creek Retrievers will host the training.  The training day will be for puppies and young junior dogs.  There will be demonstrations and will conclude with the viewing of some of the Bill Hillman puppy training video.  This is a method Steve has been using for the past several years and is very excited about.  Directions to the property will be available in the near future.  If you have any questions or want more information be sure to contact our training coordinator, Deborah Story at Training@TejasHRC.org.

Fall AKC Hunt Test - 16 & 17 October 2010

Preparations for the Fall AKC Hunt Test are continuing.  The test and panel of judges have been approved by the AKC and the event will be listed on Entry Express in the next week or two.  Volunteers are being sought for many of the tasks that remain.  Conducting hunt tests are an integral part of why a hunting retriever training club like Tejas exists.  We all depend on clubs to hold tests that give us an opportunity to run our dogs and gain passes to a title.  As a club, we need to do our part to provide this same opportunity to other clubs' members.  Please plan to attend the August General Meeting as the Hunt Test Chairman, Bill Cox will update us on what activities are completed and what opportunities remain for which your talents are needed.  If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to assist at the hunt test, please let Bill know via email: william.cox@genmills.com.

Winter Upland Quad Event

The club is looking into hosting an Upland Quad event on December 11th & 12th near El Campo Texas.  Club President, Clint Zentic will share more information regarding the event at our August General Meeting and through email blasts.
