Who We Are

Tejas Hunting Retriever Club is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1985 by a dedicated group of dog trainers and enthusiasts and is affiliated with the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, and is a member of the Hunting Retriever Club and the Master National Retriever Club.

Tejas Hunting Retriever Club is a nonprofit organization. Tejas HRC shall not be conducted or operated for profit, and no part of any proceeds of any Hunt Test or remainder of residue from dues or donations to the Club shall benefit any members or individuals.

Our goals are to:

1. Promote and encourage training and use of retrievers as conservation tools for the sound management of our wildlife resources.
2. Promote and encourage quality in breeding, hunting, and testing of purebred retrievers, bringing their natural abilities to perfection.
3. Encourage good sportsmanship in retriever related hunting activities and hunting tests.
4. Conduct sanctioned and licensed specialty shows, field trials, and hunting tests under the rules of the United Kennel Club, Hunting Retriever Club, and the American Kennel Club.

Club Meetings

Regular club meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month from 7pm - 9pm at the Gander Mountain located at 19820 Hempstead Hwy, Houston (Map). In addition to discussing club business, Tejas HRC routinely invites professional trainers, professional guide services, veterinarians and wildlife specialists to give presentations and engage in discussions of items related to their area of expertise.

Meetings are informal and intended to promote camaraderie between members. Guests and individuals interested in joining Tejas HRC are always welcome!

Hunt Tests

Tejas HRC currently conducts three sanctioned hunt tests per year. These events are intended to test a dog's training and ability under realistic hunting conditions and are conducted under either AKC or HRC rules. In 2008 these tests are scheduled for the third weekend in February, the last weekend in April, and the third weekend in October. Titles

Hunt tests allow a handler or owner to test a dog's training and ability under realistic hunting conditions and allow a dog to compete against a set standard rather than against other dogs. They also afford an opportunity to earn titles and are a lot of fun to run. There are two sanctioning organizations for Hunt Test titles; The AKC and the UKC/HRC.

Upland Hunter (UH)

JH & SHR - Passed basic level Hunt Test. The dog can perform single retrieves on both land and in water. Shows the dog may have potential and could become a complete gun dog if training is continued.

SH & HR - Passed intermediate level Hunt Test. The dog is a capable hunting companion and can perform double retrieves as well as blinds on land and in water. The dog is steady and will honor other working dogs.

MH & HRCH - Passed highest level Hunt Test. The dog can perform multiple retrieves at long distances on land and in water. In addition the dog can run complex blind retrieves and is a complete hunting companion.
